Y Yearbook 10 (YYB 10),  11 (YYB 11) , 12 (YYB 12)             4 credits

Prerequisite: Recommendation from a teacher who attests to the student’s responsibility and strengths in art, writing, or leadership skills.
Students enrolled in this course will produce all aspects of the school yearbook. Students who have an interest in developing their photography, journalism, and computer graphics or marketing skills are encouraged to enroll. Students who work after school or who have time consuming activities are encouraged to talk to the teacher before applying.  Teacher approval is required.

 

Y Desktop Publishing 10  (YDTP 10)Photoshop      4 credit

Students will use computers to learn how to create, design and publish a wide range of print, video and web-based projects and publications at the beginner level, primarily using Adobe Photoshop CS.  They will learn the basics of Photoshop (color in Photoshop, retouching & enhancing photos, combining images, using filters, and special effects in images and type) over the course year.  This course is designed for students of all ranges of computer experience from total beginners to the advanced. Even if you have no experience at computers or have never taken an art course before you will not be at a disadvantage-we start from the ground up without a lot of technical mumbo jumbo.  Students may take this course in Gr. 10, 11, or 12. Become a Photoshop phenom!!  It’s all about Photoshop!!

Prerequisite: Teacher Permission                                                                                                  
The purpose of this course is to introduce theories of leadership and to practice leadership skills. The course will be divided each term into lessons of theory and classes of practical application. The Lion Pride program at Yale will reflect the belief that students want to become meaningfully involved in the school community.
Student Selection Criteria:
All students must go through an application process after which they will be informed if they have been accepted into the course. Applications
are available from Ms. Burdeyny in E111 starting Feb. 1. The deadline to apply is April 30.

Y Peer Tutoring 11  (YPTU 11)   4 credits

Prerequisite: Teacher Permission                                                                                                                  
This course is available to Grade 11 and 12 students who have a “B” average and an excellent attendance record. The course provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in helping peers. Students will be assigned to work with individual students or selected classrooms. Evaluation will be based on assignments, teacher evaluation, attendance and journals.  This is an experiential course, so excellent attendance is mandatory.

 

Y Peer Tutoring 12  (YPTU 12)   4 credits

Prerequisite: Teacher Permission
Peer Tutoring 12 is available to Grade 12 students with a solid academic background. The course will involve helping students in regular classroom teaching environments. A mini-teaching unit will also be completed under the supervision of the sponsor classroom. This course is invaluable to those students wishing to pursue a career in education or related fields. This is an experiential course, so excellent attendance is mandatory.

 

Y Community Services 12  (YCSLD 12) 4 credits

Prerequisite: Teacher Permission              
This course is designed to give grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to work in an environment where they learn to provide specialized assistance to students with special needs. Students will work under the supervision of the Resource Room teacher to provide assistance to students in a variety of contexts. Students will develop instructional skills, communication skills, leadership skills, teamwork and interpersonal relations and conflict management. Students will also learn the value and complexity of social diversity. The course will include some theoretical study in the area of exceptionality, instructional skills, communication skills and leadership skills, and will apply that learning in the context of working with special needs students.

 

Y Fine Arts Assistant 11: Music/Art (YFAA 11)      4 credits

Prerequisite: teacher permission
This course is essentially an opportunity to provide assistance to a classroom teacher in the Fine Arts area. The course will provide leadership opportunities for advanced level students.
