Reminder to Grads!
A quick reminder to all Grads to complete their Grad Exit Interview with me. I would like to have all of them completed no later than Friday, May 31st. If I am not in my office when you come to do your interview, please text me (604-613-7150) to set up a time that is convenient to complete the interview. This is a mandatory piece, essential to Graduation, and must be completed to receive your Dogwood.
Congrats to Junior Police Academy!
Congratulations to Ethan Wilson, Jesse Worley, Josh Dumitrascu, and Jordan Dobos who successfully completed the Abbotsford Junior Police Academy over the Spring Break. This highly competitive program provides a unique experience that allows students to participate in a 60 hour day camp situation. Students are exposed to a variety of policing tasks and skills. Yale PAC Annual General Meeting June 12th!
All parents are invited to attend the Yale PAC Annual General Meeting on June 12, 2013 at 7:00pm in the Yale school library. This meeting will include PAC Executive Elections for the upcoming 2013/2014 school year. Executive positions include PAC Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. Other volunteer positions of School Planning Committee and District School Planning Committee person(s) are also held that night. All positions are wonderful opportunities to get involved in your child's school.
Be a Big Brother or Big Sister
Do you want to make a difference? Do you want to share some of your good fortune? Why not be a Big Brother or Big Sister to a young person that could really benefit from what you can offer.
This year we had 8 Yale students spend one hour a week at W.A. Fraser with a Little Brother or Little Sister. Among other things, they played games, chatted, and sometimes just "hung out" with their Little Sibling.
The In School Mentoring program provides girls and boys with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with, within school grounds. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out in the playground.
The In School Mentoring program requires a weekly visit of 1 hour for the duration of the school year. Matches do not meet over the summer break or during other school holidays.
The program strives to do the following:
-provide a role model and a friend for girls and boys.
-promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.
-instill trust and self-confidence in order to make healthy decisions.
-encourage leadership skills and independent thinking.
-and above all, make a difference while having fun.

Grade 10 Provincial Skills Field trip
Every year, all Secondary Schools in the Abbotsford School District send their grade 10's to the Skills Canada BC Competition that profiles and celebrates skilled labor in B.C. On Wednesday, April 17th all of Yale Secondary grade 10's will be bussed during Bk. D to the Tradex where they will observe the various Trades and Technology competitions. The students will watch Yale Lion, Dave Lawton, add a Provincial victory to his Regional Gold Medal in the Auto Service Technician category, and earn a trip to the National Competition later in the year. The Yale Robotics 9 class led by Mr. van Hunenstijn will also be competing at the Tradex.

Yale Rugby Boys Back From UK Tour!
The Yale Senior Boys rugby squad just returned from a very successful tour of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The squad of twenty-eight flew out on March 16th and began their trip in London England. They visited the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus, and the Parliament Buildings. After a brief stay in London the team traveled to Rugby, England and were hosted by Lawrence Sheriff Grammar School. The team was given a walking tour of Rugby School, where William Webb Ellis picked up a soccer ball in PE class and decided to run with it. This later became the game of rugby. The team played their first game against Lawrence Sheriff School, which was a very close match that saw Yale fall 27-25.
After a great stay in England, the team traveled to Wales. There was a brief stop in the capital city of Cardiff and then they arrived at Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest, Wales. The team did a day trip to St David's Cathedral and went to White Sands beach on the Welsh coastline. The team's second game against Picton school was played in a downpour and high winds. The team lost 22-12 in a very sloppy game by both sides.
The next stop for the squad was in Tenby, Wales. Before arriving at Greenhill School though, the team went to Pembroke Castle, which was first built in 1093. The team were also taken to Swansea to watch a professional game of rugby in Liberty Stadium. There were two scheduled games against Greenhill. In the first game Yale won 19-12 in a hard fought match. In the second game Yale dominated and won 33-10. Spencer Loughlin scored two tries and Travis Murray was the Man of the Match.
The team then crossed the Irish Sea to Ireland. They were given some free time in Dublin before meeting their hosts in Downpatrick, Norther Ireland. The team were able to have a full day in Belfast, visiting the Freedom Wall and the Titanic Exhibit. The last game on tour the Lions fell to Down High, which was a very good side that beat Yale 22-5. On the last day of tour the team visited the North Coast and saw Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.
The boys made some lasting friendships and learned a lot about the game of rugby to get them ready for the season.
