Music

Band 10, 11, 12  (MCB 10, 11, 12) 4 credits each

The main emphasis will be on improving technical skills and musical understanding. Music to be performed will be chosen from all styles and will be from the advanced category. Students will be directed into a team effort as well as being responsible for their own individual progress. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Students will be expected to keep up their studies to enable them to tour with the Band class.

Jazz Band 10-12  (MJB 10, 11, 12) 4 credits each

This course is offered to students who are interested in Stage Band music and who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar or drums. This course is performance oriented. This band will regularly perform concerts and will complete locally in festivals.  Students must take concert band concurrently to learn the proper techniques. This class meets before the regular first period in the morning on an alternating basis.

Choir 10, 11, 12  (MCC 10, 11, 12) 4 credits each

This course is offered to any student who has an interest in singing in a group. Students need only to want to participate in choral singing to be eligible. The emphasis will be on the enjoyment and understanding of music through singing. Requirements include the development of music fundamentals and attendance at all rehearsals and performances.
Choir class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Instrumental Music 11: Guitar (IMG 11) 4 credits

Guitar 11 is an advanced guitar course. This class requires permission from the instructor.  Students must provide their own acoustical guitar.

Drama

Drama 10: General  (DRG 10)     4 credits

Drama 10 is an extension of Drama 9 plus it explores script work, speech, and movement in performance. There will be a focus on acquiring some basic knowledge about technical theatre as a performing art. We will explore lighting, set design, sound and costumes. Evaluation is based on participating, performance, and completion of assignments.

Theatre Perform. 11: Acting  (TPA 11) 4 credits

Prerequisite: Drama 10 or Teacher permission.
Students will study movement, sensitivity exercises, improvisation, mime, speech, play building and character development. Some theatre history is covered. Emphasis is placed on developing a personal approach to role. Evaluation will be based on class participation, written assignments, and performance.

Theatre Perform. 12: Acting  (TPA 12) 4 credits

Prerequisite: Theatre Performance Acting 11
A greater emphasis is placed on the script and its interpretation and there are in-depth performances and written assignments. A study of acting styles through history is also part of the course. Students will be required to perform for a variety of audiences. Emphasis is placed on refining an effective personal approach to role. Evaluation is based on class participation, written assignments and performance.

Y Musical Theatre 10  (YMUTH 10)  4 credits

Every February, Yale Musical Theatre puts on a show, and you can be part of it! Our musical plays
are presented at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, and include acting, singing, dancing, and professional
level production elements such as sets, lighting, sound, and costumes. Members of the Musical Theatre class can choose be Performers in the Cast, or members of the Technical Crew, or play in the Pit Orchestra. No previous experience is necessary for either the Performance or Technical streams. No auditions are necessary to be part of the Cast. Enrollment in the Pit Orchestra is by teacher permission only.
Classes begin the first week of school, and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Starting in mid-October, and continuing until the February performances, class also meets on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Y Musical Theatre 12  (YMUTH 12) 4 credits

Musical Theatre 12 further develops and refines those acting and theatre concepts and skills outlined in the Musical Theatre 11 curriculum. This advanced course is designed for the highly motivated Musical Theatre student who wishes to pursue the study of contemporary dramatic and Musical or Technical Theatre theory through individual study, group discussion, focused research, and performance.    
At the Grade 12 level, students are exposed to higher-level acting method and are granted opportunities for leadership and solo performances within the framework of  a Musical Theatre production.
