Yale Competes at Kwantlen Science Challenge!

It is exciting to observe achievements by this year's grads who already took advantage of an opportunity to remind British Columbia of Yale's excellence in academics. On November 24, Yale Secondary students went to Kwantlen Polytechnic University to compete in the annual Kwantlen Science Challenge. A team of five grade 12 Yale students, namely Aneka Friesen, JiSup Kim, Carol Kwon, Dan Moon and Paul Stewardson placed second in the senior division. The competition consisted of 29 of British Columbia's top public and private high schools who also put together a team of science students. The event took place on the Kwantlen campus located in Richmond where laboratories were available for the event's activities. The ranking was determined by combining scores from events testing knowledge and application of the principles of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. These challenging activities were intended for students beyond BC high school curriculum. This fit perfectly for Yale's team who have been well taught by Yale's Advanced Placement teachers at the university level in the subjects tested. Thanks especially to Ms. Smith, Mr. Fowler, Mr. Penner and Ms. Hart, the team said they couldn't have done it without you.

Yale Gives Back to the Community

scarehunger2012photo3

The Yale Leadership students have had a busy past few weeks. A group of students organized a campaign named "We Scare Hunger", where they went door to door on Halloween night asking for food donations for the local food bank. The students were able to collect 300 cans of food that were donated to the Abbotsford Food Bank. The Leadership program also sent 20 students to volunteer at the Abbotsford Food Bank warehouse, where they sorted food and stocked the shelves.

Earlier in the school year, the Leadership program held a clothing drive for the Cyrus Center. The students were able to collect an entire truck load of clothing that was delivered to the Cyrus Center. The students also had a movie night at the school that raised $500, which was donated to the Children's Hospital. There are many other community and global service projects coming up, including a massive food drive and the Calculated Acts of Kindness campaign.
