UBC Changes Entrance Requirements for September 2009

For students entering UBC in September 2009 there has been a change in the requirement regarding writing Optional Grade 12 Provincial Examinations.

BC secondary school graduates who apply to begin studies at UBC in September 2009 will no longer be required to complete BC Ministry of Education provincial examinations (other than those required for graduation) for the purpose of admission to the university. This change is applicable to both UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan.

  1. If students write the Optional Provincial examination, UBC will consider the higher of the two marks –School mark or Blended mark (school mark + exam mark). This means that for UBC entrance there is no disadvantage to attempting the exam.

  1. English 12 is NOT an optional exam. It is Required and must be written.
  1.  This policy will apply to students who take a course with an optional Provincial Exam in 2007-08 who do not apply to UBC until September 2009. This would include this year’s Grade 12 students who take a year off before applying and Grade 11 students who are taking an examinable Grade 12 course.

Grade 12 courses offered at Yale that have an Optional Provincial Examination include:
Literature 12, French 12, Japanese 12, History 12, Geography 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12, Biology 12, Geology 12 and Mathematics 12.

The University of New Brunswick, one of the top five universities in Canada*, has launched a student recruitment campaign with a twist.  A lucky Yale student could win free tuition for a year.
Check out http://www.onlyoneU.ca  to have a chance to win.

University of Toronto Youth Summer Programs (YSP)
This summer U of T is offering one-week summer programs that give high school students a taste of what it is like to be in medical or law school. There are 4 different medical programs and one law program. The cost is just under $1000 for a week including supervision, food and accomodation. Information at www.ysp.utoronto.ca

** Optional Provincial exams no longer required at UCFV **

UCFV will no longer require optional provincial exams for grade 12
courses used for entrance requirements or course prerequisites. Should a
student elect to write an optional grade 12 provincial exam, the higher
of the school mark or the blended grade (school mark and provincial exam
result combined) will be used for admission or course prerequisites.

Students must continue to write the provincial examinations for those
subjects where examinations are mandatory in order to meet BC Graduation
Program requirements. For these courses, the higher of the school mark
or the blended grade will be used for admission or course
prerequisites.

Jan. 31 - Early Admissions deadline reminder

January 31 is the deadline for competitive entry, specific-intake
(semester-based) programs at UCFV. We recommend students apply by this
date to the program of their choice, as guaranteed admission will end
January 31 (see below for details), and certain programs may begin to
fill shortly thereafter. As well, early admission results in an earlier
registration date. Students can apply online at www.pas.bc.ca or mail in
paper application, available on our website at
www.ucfv.ca/ar/admissions/apply.htm .

SFU bulletin

As a result of the January 7th Senate meeting, SFU will continue to require that BC grade 12 students applying to the University write provincial exams. It was also determined that additional committee work will be done to study the issue further. At this time, senior students are advised to write their provincials.

December 2007

Recent decisions by the University of Victoria and UBCVancouver about whether grade 12 students need to write optional provincial exams have led other institutions to reconsider their policies. Institutions currently considering their policies include: SFU, UBC Okanagan and UCFV. These decisions will likely be announced in December and January and may affect students' decisions about whether to write optional provincial exams in January. The following website might help students trying to determine whether writing a final provincial exam is in their best interest.

http://www.bcschoolcounsellor.com/prov_exams.htm#list

Things for students to consider:

1. The following information is only for provincial courses that have an Optional exam. Language Arts 12 (English 12) has a Required exam which must be written.
2. Some institutions will take the better of the two marks - School mark or the blended final (60% school mark/40% exam) (UVic)
3. Some institutions will take the final mark whichever it is (If the student doesn't write, they use the School mark; if the student writes, they take the blended mark.)
4. Some institutions take only the blended mark. The exam must be written (UBC Vancouver)
5. Students have until the day of the exam to decide whether to write the exam. As soon as the student signs in and opens the exam booklet, they have chosen to write the exam. They cannot take a look and leave.
6. To receive a provincial scholarship, a student must write the Optional provincial exam and score 86% or higher (or score a 4 or 5 on the AP equivalent course (English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French)

UVic no longer requires optional provincial exams as an admission requirement
BC secondary students applying to the University of Victoria to begin studies in September 2008 no longer need to
